In the modern age of remote work, where traditional offices have given way to virtual meeting spaces and home offices, building connections and a sense of togetherness among employees can be quite a challenge. Remember the good old water cooler chats and bonding that used to happen in physical offices? Well, those moments have become a thing of the past.

I studied the topic of remote working social interaction in my recently published master’s thesis “Remote work tuned: ways to boost social interaction remotely in remote companies in Europe and USA”. It’s available here: https://www.theseus.fi/handle/10024/804044. According to the research, it’s important for remote companies to come up with different social interaction activities and practices to enhance team connection and bonding. The virtual water cooler is one of the most popular ways of achieving that.

In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at what a virtual water cooler is, how it benefits remote teams, the activities you can do, and the tools that make it all possible.

What Is a Virtual Water Cooler?

A virtual water cooler is an online space designed to replicate the spontaneous, non-work-related conversations that used to occur around a physical water cooler or break room in traditional offices. It serves as a digital gathering place for remote workers to engage in informal discussions, share personal stories, and connect on a personal level.

To set up a virtual water cooler, all you need is the right communication tools, such as video conferencing platforms, messaging apps like Slack, or specialized virtual water cooler platforms. Creating designated spaces for various topics and interests allows employees to participate in conversations that align with their preferences.

Benefits of a Virtual Water Cooler in Remote Work

1️⃣ Building Connections and Fostering Community

One of the primary benefits of a virtual water cooler is its ability to bridge the gap between remote team members. By providing a space for casual conversations and personal interactions, remote workers can form connections, share experiences, and build a sense of community, even when physically distant.

2️⃣ Boosting Employee Engagement

Virtual water coolers are more than just a place for chitchat; they play a crucial role in increasing employee engagement. When employees feel connected to their colleagues and company culture, they tend to be more engaged, motivated, and satisfied with their work.

3️⃣ Sparking Innovation

Informal discussions often lead to creative ideas and problem-solving. Virtual water cooler conversations can be a breeding ground for innovation, as employees from various departments and backgrounds come together to share their thoughts and experiences.

Virtual Water Cooler Activities

Engaging in virtual water cooler activities is essential to keep the conversations flowing and the connections growing. Here are some popular activities to consider:

1️⃣ Daily Icebreaker Questions

Designate someone to pose a question of the day in your virtual water cooler space. This encourages ongoing conversation and helps team members learn more about each other.

2️⃣ Online Games and Challenges

During virtual meetings or video calls, incorporate fun online games or challenges. This not only helps team members relax but also builds rapport and camaraderie.

3️⃣ Interest-Based Clubs

Create clubs or discussion groups based on common interests like book clubs, movie recommendations, or hobby groups. These clubs encourage employees to bond over shared passions.

Virtual Water Cooler Tools

Selecting the right tools is crucial for a successful virtual water cooler experience. Here are some options to consider:

1️⃣ Messaging Apps (e.g., Slack)

Messaging apps offer a convenient way to set up virtual water cooler spaces with themed channels for different topics.

2️⃣ Video Conferencing Platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams)

These platforms can be used for real-time water cooler sessions, providing face-to-face interactions in a virtual environment.

3️⃣ Specialized Platforms (e.g., Mural, Sococo)

Specialized platforms offer unique features tailored for virtual water cooler interactions, such as digital whiteboards or virtual office environments.

In conclusion, the virtual water cooler is a valuable tool for remote teams seeking to build connections and foster a sense of community. By leveraging the right tools and engaging in activities that encourage conversation and bonding, companies can create a positive work environment that benefits everyone involved. In the world of remote work, the virtual water cooler is more than just a substitute for the physical space—it’s a gateway to a more connected and engaged workforce.
