Remote work can be challenging. When team members aren’t in the same office, there may be times they may feel disconnected and disengaged. There are solutions to this by engaging employees and doing intentional acts of socializing in the companies. One method to foster those is called knowledge osmosis.

What’s it all about? Knowledge osmosis refers to learning through passive absorption from the people and resources around you. Naturally, remotely this happens by making use of different platforms to communicate and collaborate with people.

In a traditional office environment, there are conversations between colleagues or discussions on how someone else approaches a problem. This type of learning happens all the time in an in-person work environment, but when team members are remote, they can miss out on these valuable opportunities.

Knowledge osmosis helps recreate that kind of learning in virtual environments. It involves fostering an atmosphere where team members are encouraged to exchange information and ideas naturally and organically without feeling any pressure for example from some kind of formal teaching. One way to use knowledge osmosis in modern remote companies to perfect collaboration is by documenting everything and making work transparent to everyone.

How would knowledge osmosis benefit teamwork? Here are a few insights:

💡 Enhanced Collaboration: By encouraging knowledge sharing in a natural, organic way remote teams can break down communication barriers and collaborate more effectively. These practices could include e.g setting up virtual social events or team-building activities or creating channels for informal communication and collaboration, such as chat groups or discussion forums.

💡 Improved Learning: Individuals can learn things without consciously trying to recall them or studying for exams. This is because knowledge is there everywhere around us, making it simple to obtain and understand. Instead of attending a formal training session or reading a lengthy article, an individual can learn by just observing how their coworkers work or listening to their talk, etc. (OpenAI, 2023)

💡 Increased Engagement: When team members feel connected to their work and their colleagues, they are more likely to be engaged and productive. Knowledge osmosis can help foster a sense of community and belonging in remote teams.

In what ways could you incorporate knowledge osmosis into remote team working?

  1. Embrace informal learning: Encourage your team to have informal conversations and interactions that can foster knowledge osmosis. This could be as simple as setting up a virtual “watercooler” or encouraging team members to chat in a designated Slack channel.
  2. Create a shared library of resources: Give your team access to a shared library of resources that they can learn from, whether it’s training videos, podcasts, or articles.
  3. Celebrate knowledge sharing: Acknowledge and celebrate team members who share their knowledge and expertise with the rest of the team. This can encourage others to do the same and foster a culture of learning and growth.

Different platforms are of help to make knowledge osmosis happen in remote working. Tools like Slack, Loom, Notion, Miro, or Mural can be used as team communication tools that allow for both direct messaging and group conversations, sharing messages and information with each other. By creating a dedicated channel, page, or folder for knowledge sharing, team members can easily share information and insights with one another, promoting knowledge osmosis. And that’s the beauty of remote working: digital traces, recordings, documents, etc. all show how different people deal with information and how they solve situations and tasks. It’s effective to learn by observing those practices.
